MUTHURAI (மூதுரை)

    1.    வேங்கை வரிப்புலிக்குத் தீர்த்த விடதாரி

        ஆங்கதனுக் காகார மானாற்போல் – பாங்கறியாப்

        புல்லறி வாளர்க்குச் செய்த வுபகாரம்

        கல்லின்மே விட்ட கலம்.

 

        To tiger striped he falls a prey

        Who drives its ailing pain away;

        When dropped on rock a pot does break

        In the base lives not the love you stake.

 

    2.    அடக்க முடையா ரறிவிலரென் றெண்ணிக்

        கடக்கக் கருதவும் வேண்டா – மடைத்தலையில்

        ஒடிமீ னோட வுறுமீன் வருமளவும்

        வாடி யிருக்குமாங் கொக்கு.

 

        Take not as "fool" the modest wise,

        Nor venture high 'bove such to rise;

        The heron sits alert and cool

        To catch the biggest in the pool.

 

    3.    அற்ற குளத்தி னறுநீர்ப் பறவைபோல்

        உற்றுழித் தீர்வா ருறவல்லர் – அக்குளத்தில்

        கொட்டியு மாம்பலு நெய்தலும் போலவே

        ஒட்டி யுவர்வா ருறவு.

 

        Who fly, as birds from dried up lake,

        In times of want, their friends forsake,

        But, who, as lilies, cling there fast

        Make love and joy for every last.

 

    4.    சீரியர் கெட்டாலுஞ் சீரியர் சீரியரே

        அல்லாதார் கெட்டாலு மல்லாதார் – அல்லாதார்

        பொன்னின் குடமுடைந்தாற் பொன்னாகு மென்னாரும்

        மண்ணின் குடமுடைந்தக் கால்.

 

        Tho' fallen low, the good are good;

        The bad, tho' ruined, change not their mood;

        A broken pot of gold is gold;

        Of clay is but the clay of old.

 

    

5.    ஆழ வமுக்கி முகக்கினு மாழ்கடனீர்

    நாழி முகவாது நானாழி – தோழி

    நிதியும் கணவனும் நேர்படினுந் தந்தம்

    விதியின் பயனே பயன்.

 

    Tho' deep it plunges in the main

    One seer cannot four contain;

    Tho' wedded rich the spouses be

    No pow'r can change their destiny.

 

6.    உடன்பிறந்தார் சுற்றத்தா ரென்றிருக்க வேண்டா

    உடன்பிறந்தே கொல்லும் வியாதி – உடன்பிறவா

    மாமலையி லுள்ள மருந்தே பிணிதீர்க்கும்

    அம்மருந்து போல்வாரு முண்டு.

 

    As fatal ills with birth begin

    Count not your friends from kith and kin

    As mountain herbs your health restore

    Your friends might come from distant shore.

 

7.    இல்லா ளகத்திருக்க வில்லாத தொன்றில்லை

    இல்லாறு மில்லாளே யாமாயின் – இல்லாள்

    வலிகிடந்த மாற்ற முரைக்குமே லவ்வில்

    புலிகிடந்த தூறாய் விடும்.

 

    That home is truly blessed in all,

    Where wife obeys her Duty's call;

    Bear garden' tis where she gives vent,

    The shrew, to fury turbulent.

 

8.    எழுதிய வாறா மென்றிரா மடநெஞ்சே

    கருதியவாறாமோ கருமம் – கருதிப்போய்க்

    கர்ப்பகத்தைச் சேர்ந்தோர்க்குக் காஞ்சிரங்கா யீந்த்தேல்

    முற்பவத்திற் செய்த வினை.

 

    Oh foolish mind, thou art not free;

    All things must go by heaven's decree.

    If 'Karpakam' should bitter turn

    Thy former birth thou hast to mourn.

 

9.    நற்றா மரைக்கயத்தி னல்லன்னஞ் சேர்ந்தாற்போல்

    கற்றாரைக் கற்றாரே காமுறுவர் – கற்பில்லா

    மூர்க்கரை மூர்க்கர் முகப்பர் முதுகாட்டில்

    காக்கை யுகக்கும் பிணம்.

 

 

    The swans enjoy a lotus pool;

    The wise admire a learned school;

    The ravens hov'r the dead around

    The bad with th' bad are always found.

 

10.    நஞ்சுடமை தானறிந்து நாகங் கரைந்துறையும்

    அஞ்சாப் புறக்கிடக்கு நீர்ப்பாம்பு – நெஞ்சில்

    காவுடையார் தம்மைக் காப்பர் கரவார்

    கரவிலா நெஞ்சத் தவர்.

 

    The Cobra's hide, as fangs they bear,

    While water-snakes lie without fear;

    The guilty lurk as sins they plan

    While free he moves the honest man.

 

11.    மன்னனு மாசறக் கற்றோனுஞ் சீர்தூக்கின்

    மன்னனிற் கற்றோன் சிறப்புடையன் – மன்னனுக்குத்

    தன்றேச மல்லாற் சிறப்பில்லை கற்றோற்குச்

    சென்றவிட மெல்லாஞ் சிறப்பு.

 

    With kings compare the learned wise,

    And mark who does the higher rise;

    The king is king but in his land

    While honor wide the wise command.

 

12.    கல்லாத மாந்தர்க்குக் கற்றுணர்ந்தார் சொற்கூற்றம்

    அல்லாத மாந்தர்க் கறக்கூற்றம் – மெல்லிய

    வாழைக்குத் தானீன்ற காய்கூற்றங் கூற்றமே

    இல்லிற் கிசைந்தொழுகாப் பெண்.

 

    The plantain dies when fruit it brings;

    One's folly ends as wisdom springs;

    All evils cease where love is true

    And peace departs from the home of the shrew.

 

13.    சந்தன மென்குறடு தான்றேய்ந்த காலத்தும்

    கந்தங் குறைபடா தாதலால் – தந்தம்

    தனஞ்சிறிய ராயினுந் தார்வேந்தர் கேட்டால்

    மனஞ்சிறிய ராவரோ மற்று.

 

    Tho' grinding doth its fibers waste,

    The Sandal gives a fragrant paste;

    The mighty kings have but one mind

    Tho' wealth they lose by fate unkind.

 

 

 

14.    சாந்தனையுந் தீயனவே செய்திடினுந் தாமவரை

    ஆந்தனையுங் காப்பா ரறிவுடையோர் – மாந்தர்

    குறைக்குந் தனையுங் குளிர்நிழலைத் தந்து

    மறைக்குமாங் கொண்டீர் மரம்.

 

    As cooling shade a tree bestows,

    Tho' woodman gives it fatal blows,

    The wise will ev'r protect their foes,

    Tho' these their work of love oppose.

 

15.    கவையாகிக் கொம்பாகிக் காட்டகத்தே நிற்கும்

    அவையல்ல நல்ல மரங்கள் – சவைநடுவே

    நீட்டோலை வாசியா நின்றான் குறிப்பறிய

    மாட்டா தவனன் மரம்.

 

    Those spreading trees that fill a wood

    Do they give blocks of fibre good?

    When blocks they are who cannot rise

    To read in an assembly wise.

    

16.    நன்றியொருவற்குச் செய்தக்காலந்நன்றி

    என்றுதருங்கொ லெனவேண்டா – நின்று

    தளராவளர்தெங்து தாளுண்டநீரைத்

    தலையாலே தான்றருதலால்.

 

    An act of love once done, the good

    Returns unasked with promptitude,

    As from its head the palm as frutis

    Returns the water sucked by roots.

 

17.    நல்லாரொருவர்க்குச் செய்தவுபகாரம்

    கன்மேலெழுத்துப் போற்காணுமே – அல்லாத

    ஈரமில்லா நெஞ்சத்தார்க் கீந்தவுபகாரம்

    நீர்மேலெழுத்திற்கு நேர்.

 

    An act of love the good will keep

    As writ on stone in mem'ry deep

    The bad forget it insincere

    As quick as marks on water clear.

 

18.    இன்னாவிளமை வறுமைவந்தெய்தியக்கால்

    இன்னாவளவி லினியவும் – இன்னாத

    நாளல்லாநாள்பூத்த நன்மலரும்போலுமே

    ஆளில்லா மங்கைக்கழகு.

 

 

    Youth gives no joys in poverty

    Nor wealth in life's extremity.

    As flowers bloom, their season gone,

    Or beauty unwed sits alone.

 

19.    அட்டாலும் பால்சுவையிற் குன்றாதளவல்ல

    நட்டாலும் நண்பல்லார் – நண்பல்லர்

    கெட்டாலும்மேன்மக்கள் மேன்மக்களே சங்கு

    சுட்டாலும் வெண்மைதரும்.

 

    The milk is sweet, tho' boiled hot,

    The bad, tho' loved as friends meet not,

    Tho' burnt to dust, the conch is white,

    The good, tho' poor, are honest right.

 

20.    அடுத்துமுயன்றாலு மாகுநாளன்றி

    எடுத்தகருமங்களாகா – தொடுத்த

    உருவத்தானீண்ட வுயர்மரங்களெல்லாம்

    பருவத்தாலன்றிப் பழா.

 

    A man may work with ceaseless stress,

    But till God wills there's no success;

    A tree tho' growing high and strong

    Its fruits gives not in seasons wrong.

 

21.    உற்றவிடத்திலுயிர்வழங்குந் தன்மையோர்

    பற்றவரைக்கண்டாற் பணிவரோ – கற்றூண்

    பிளந்திறுவதல்லாற் பெரும்பாரந்தாங்கின்

    தளர்ந்துவளையுமோ தான்.

 

    Who honour guard at risk of life

    Will they bend knee to foes in strife;

    A pillar stone may split off straight,

    Will it bend under pressing weight.

 

22.    நீரளவேயாகுமாம் நீராம்பறாங்கற்ற

    நூலளவேயாகுமா நுண்ணறிவு – மேலைத்

    தவத்தளவேயாகுமாந் தாம்பெற்றசெல்வம்

    குலத்தளவேயாகுங் குணம்.

 

    As high as water lilies rise,

    As wide as studies knowledge lies,

    As great as penance past our weal

    As good as birth one's bent you feel.

 

 

 

23.    நல்லாரைக்காண்பதுவும் நன்றே நலமிக்க

    நல்லார்சொற்கேட்பதுவும் நன்றே – நல்லார்

    குணங்களுரைப்பதுவும் நன்றே யவரோ

    டிணங்கியிருப்பதுவு நன்று.

 

    To seek the good, and wisdom gain

    From words that glowing grace contain

    To praise their life, and live in peace

    At one with them will bliss increase.

 

24.    தீயாரைக்காண்பதுவும் தீதேதிருவற்ற

    தீயார்சொற்கேட்பதுவும் தீதே – தீயார்

    குணங்களுரைப்பதுவும் தீதே யவரோ

    டிணங்கியிருப்பதுவுந் தீது.

 

    To seek the bad, and list with care

    To words that are of virtue bare,

    To speak of them, and friendship keep

    With such will bring corruption deep.

 

25.    நெல்லுக்கிறைத்தநீர் வாய்க்கால்வழியோடிப்

    புல்லுக்குமங்கே பொசியுமாம் – தொல்லுலகில்

    நல்லாரொருவருளரே யவர்பொருட்டிங்

    கெல்லார்க்கும்பெய்யு மழை.

 

    The water led to paddy fields

    To plants and grass nutrition yields

    Where but one good man lives will fall

    Refreshing show'rs on one and all.

 

26.    பண்டுமுளைப்ப தரிசியேயானாலும்

    விண்டுமிபோனால் முளையாதாம் – கொண்ட

    ஆற்றலுடையார்க்கு மாகாதளவின்றி

    ஏற்றகருமஞ் செயல்.

 

    Tho' seeds, it is, that germ contain,

    Bereft of husk will sprout no grain;

    A man, tho' strong, succeeds but rare,

    Of help without if he stands bare.

 

27.    மடல்பெரிதுதாழை மகிழினிதுகந்தம்

    உடல்சிறியரென்றிருக்க வேண்டா – கடல்பெரிது

    மண்ணீருமாகா ததனருகே சிற்றூறல்

    உண்ணீருமாகி விடும்.

 

 

    "Thalai" is big, but "makil" sweet

    By form judge not of men you meet;

    There bathe but few, tho' sea is wide

    While springs nearby one's thirst subside.

 

28.    கானமயிலாடக் கண்டிருந்தவான்கோழி

    தானுமதுவாகப் பாவித்துத் – தானுந்தன்

    பொல்லாச்சிறகைவிரித் தாடினாற்போலுமே

    கல்லாதான்கற்ற கவி.

 

    As turkey struts in foolish pride,

    And spreads its tail like peacock wide,

    Do they that lack in knowledge clear

    The poet's garb presume to wear.

 

29.    கற்பிளவோடொப்பர் கயவர்கடுஞ்சினத்துப்

    பொற்பிளவோடொப்பாரும் போல்வாரே – விற்பிடித்து

    நீர்கிழியவெய்த வடுப்போலமாறுமே

    சீரொழுகுசான்றோர் சினம்.

 

    Like broken stone, or parted gold

    The bad their angry splits uphold,

    The good man's wrath as smooth subsides

    As water split by arrow glides.

 

30.    மருவினியசுற்றமு வான்பொருளுநல்ல

    உருவுமுயர்குலமு மெல்லாந் – திருமடந்தை

    ஆம்போதவளோடு மாகுமவள்பிரிந்து

    போம்போதவளோடும் போம்.

 

    All things of value, beauty, wealth,

    With kindred sweet, and glowing health

    Accrue to one by Devi's grace

    And part when off she turns her face.
